At Sarnath Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbani (in Nepal) and achieved enlightenment in Bodhgaya. After spending seven weeks at Bodhgaya following his enlightenment, the Buddha was undecided about spreading the teaching of  the Dharma to others because he realized it was profoundly difficult to discover enlightenment within oneself - and that others may not understand him. Brahma Sahampati, a disciple who became aware of the Buddha’s thoughts, pleaded with him to teach the Dharma otherwise he thought the world would be absolutely lost. The Blessed One listened to Brahma Sahampati’s pleas and out of compassion, changed his mind and decided to go to Varanasi in order to share his preachings to the five ascetics: Kondanna, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanama and Assaji who had been his disciples for six years. Two hundred years later in the 3rd century BCE (before the Christian era), Emperor Ashoka constructed a number of stupas, monasteries and viharas at Sarnath which became the cradle of Buddhism. There are many sites to visit, namely the monastery, the ruins of the main shrine, the Ashoka Line-Pillar, the Mulagandha Kutivihara temple (ancient & new), the Dhamek and Dharmrajika Stupas and Jain and many other temples in the surrounding area. The archaeological & excavation sites and museums are the most important spots worth visiting.
